A turtle shell is a ready-made grid. The plates are already separate enclosed shapes, so a child who is not yet inventing their own areas still has somewhere obvious to put each colour. One hundred designs run from sea turtles with patterned flippers through land tortoises with high domed shells to hatchlings breaking out of an egg, plus a stack of three balanced on top of each other.

Ways to use these

Plate by plate. Colour each shell plate a slightly different shade of the same colour. It is the simplest introduction to shading that needs no shading technique at all.
The hatchlings work as a sequence. Designs 12, 31, 37 and 48 show turtles coming out of a cracked egg. Printed together they make a short life-cycle wall display without needing a worksheet.
The stacked ones are for two children. Designs 10, 20, 29 and 46 stack three turtles on one page, which divides neatly between two people working on the same sheet.

Every design downloads as a US Letter PDF that also scales cleanly to A4 with “Fit to printable area”. Print in grayscale, there is no color in the files. Ordinary copier paper is fine for crayons and pencils; use cardstock or slip a spare sheet underneath for markers. Free to print at home, in a classroom or in a library, see the license.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the turtles and the tortoises here?

The sea turtles have flat paddle-shaped flippers and appear underwater, and the tortoises have short round legs and high domed shells and appear on land. Both are in the set, so you can print either or use them side by side to show the difference.

Which page suits a toddler?

Design 6, a baby turtle on a fallen log. The baby designs have a plain rounded shell without the fine plate divisions, so the turtle itself is quick to fill even though there is a background around it.

Are there pages without water?

Yes. The tortoise designs are set on land, among flowers, on a log or under the sun, with no underwater elements at all.

Can these be used for a school topic?
